Dear Parents;
Pioneer Academy of Science invites your child to participate in the 2007-2008 Science Olympiad.
Science Olympiad is a nationwide organization dedicated to improving the quality of science education and increasing student interest in science. The benefits of participating in Science Olympiad are many. Science Olympiad builds teamwork and individual science skills. Each event is designed to require participants to use science process skills to be successful. These challenging and motivational events are well balanced between the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology. There is also a balance between events requiring knowledge of science facts, concepts, processes, skills and science applications. Events in 2008 competitions include: disease detectives-environmental quality, cell biology, anatomy, balloon launch glider, robot ramble, food science, meteorology, rocks and minerals, solar system, tower building, mission possible…
These events range from engineering to astronomy, health science to biology/chemistry.
To participate in the Science Olympiads in NJ North Region, State and National Competitions we are going to create two 15-student science olympiad teams. One team will be the middle school team (grades 6-9) and one team will be the high school (grades 9-12).
In order to join the Olympiad teams at Pioneer Academy of Science, students have to pass a test that measures general science knowledge. If they pass the test, they must sign a “Science Olympiad Contract”. They will be assigned to different Olympiad events according to their test results, academic progress and skills. The detailed schedule will be announced after students are chosen.
Pioneer Academy of Science placed 1st in North Jersey and 4th at state, last year. In order to get the best results, we need our students/parents to be fully dedicated. A tremendous amount of hard work is required in preparing their projects and presentations for the competition which entails staying after school everyday, coming in on the weekends and working through the winter break. We would appreciate all the help we can get from parents, teachers and administration in order to continue the ongoing success of Pioneer Academy of Science.
For more information pleasecontact the Science Olympiad Coordinator.
We hope to see your child as a representative of our school in regional, state and/or national competitions.
Sincerely,
Mehmet Yaramis
Science Olympiad Coordinator
